Scryptid Games’ Psychic Trash Detectives RPG does not need dice; it uses trash instead in a setting where PCs are solving a mystery before the city’s garbage is collected at dawn.
Part of Zine Quest, the campaign has more than three weeks on the clock and has hit its funding goal several times over. People like the idea of playing trash animals who can see energies the rest of us cannot. You can track progress on the Kickstarter page.
The RPG is designed to tell a story in one session and is re-playable. It suits 3 to 5 players and lets you dig into self-acceptance while being totally punk about it. That’s my kinda talk.
Characters are animals that feast on rubbish; raccoons, opossums, seagulls, pigeons, dogs and cats, but I imagine that depends on where in the world you set this. No raccoons or opossums in this part of Scotland, but I’ve foxes and badgers as neighbours.
There is a GM, but it’s a shared role (akin to Alice is Missing), and Scryptid insists you don’t need RPG experience to get going.
The world is electric with psychic energy, an interconnected web of memory and emotional echoes that only animals are able to perceive. Nowhere is that energy more powerfully present than in human trash—abandoned, lost, and discarded objects with long history, aching with deep psychic wounds.
Psychic Trash Detectives is a collaborative tabletop roleplaying game where characters mine trash for psychic clues to solve a mystery plaguing their animal community. By touching trash, they receive a powerful and unique psychic vision…
You can support the indie project by shouting loudly about it all across the interwebs. Backers who pledge $5 or more will get a PDF copy as a thank-you.
A physical zine is added to the reward pile for those supporters who chipped in with at least $15. Worldwide shipping is offered, but that cost needs to be worked out later.
There are higher tiers. $40 adds the Ball of the Wild PDF and a “Creature Feature” bundle valued at $25 to the thank-you bribe.
There’s a multi-zine deal at $65 if you want to hand one to everyone in your five stong gaming group.
Some backers have even gone for the $200 option that gets you a trash-themed grab bag and a credit. The top tier almost sold out, is $350 and adds a Zoom session with someone from the team.
Scryptid Games estimate August 2023 for delivery of the project.
