Tabletop RPG fashions are weird, and who would have thought that mashing Mythos with swimsuits would be a thing now?
Jesse Ross has R’lyehwatch in ZineQuest, and the Wage Mage might be slightly ahead with Lovecrafted Lifeguards on DriveThruRPG.
However, Lovecrafted Lifeguards is only a 4-page sneak peek, and it’s a Pay What You Want with a suggested price of $0. We’re told clearly that this is a preview, a work in progress, but we don’t have much idea when the Apocalypse World Engine game is expected.
In the game, players make the rolls, and the GM picks up DOOM to use against them.
Welcome to the Old Island
It is 1993 and life on Khlul-hloo, Hawaii is nothing but days filled with sun and surf. It’s a gorgeous summer day… when a cool breeze hits you and you discover psychic powers!Soon a summer of strangeness ensues. Can you balance your duties as a full time lifeguard with your personal life? All the while a creature from the darkest depths casts its shadow over the Big Surf Challenge.
The art in Lovecrafted Lifeguards is fantastic. It’s not a surprise then to see that Wage Mage Games’ website is on Deviant Art. You can follow the artist there for more updates and a portfolio of talent.
While Lovecrafted Lifeguards’ inspiration is pretty clear, Wage Mage also cite shows such as The Wire and Sherlock in their favourites on Deviant Art, along with Old Man and the Sea, the Ernest Hemingway novel, and Siddartha as favourite books. Those are solid reading choices with Herman Heese’s classic all about self-discovery.
