I Google’d [disability coach] and didn’t see many strong results, and despite having a disability, I’d never heard the phrase before. Is it a mystery? No, I think it’s intuitive, and Luka Brave has been working with the disability community for nearly a decade.
Luka’s experience with coaching and years of TTRPG experience come together in a LARP called “How to Survive A Haunting” which is all about dealing with trauma. The campaign is live now and looking for backers.
In the game, the single player is “Stranger” – an entity with a ghost problem and a potential solution with the surprise discovery of an old journal written by someone who only refers themselves as “The Journalkeeper”.
The Journalkeeper has devoted years to studying ghosts, detailing how first to defend against them and then how to tame them.
Haunting is a gamified mental health aid, designed to help people learn more about how their body works, adopt a challenge mindset, and achieve post-traumatic growth. It is designed with a light horror aesthetic (though no actual scares in the game) to meet people in the mental space that they’re at, and not make light of extremely difficult circumstances. This is an entirely solo game that does not require a game master. It is geared towards the recovery of those with trauma and (c)PTSD.
Luka calls the game a LARP, and perhaps that’s right; if so, it’s the only solo-LARP I know.
You can support this healthy RPG by spreading the news or pledging money. Those who commit $16 or more will be thanked with a full-colour PDF edition of the game and a dyslexia-friendly version. A lower-cost option is available.
A softcover edition is added to the rewards, but with USA-only shipping, for backers at $30. That’s about £26.
At $50, the USA-only logistics apply, but the gamebook is upgraded to hardback, and two community copies of the PDF are made available.
Three softcovers are swapped in at $76, which might suit gaming groups, coaches, teachers or perhaps even retailers, although Luka doesn’t suggest as much.
At $125, those are upgraded to hardcover, while at $250, there’s on the signed hardback edition.
There are tiers beyond, with $400 for more community copies, $1,000 and even $1,500.
Luka and the team estimate delivery for as soon as July 23 for the whole project.
