There’s a free to download Tales of the Valiant preview for Kobold Press’ non-OGL 5e D&D-but-not Tales of the Valiant.
Once known as Project Black Flag, the game takes the heart of the high fantasy 5e rules and creates a WotC-free RPG. Within a day of launch, the Kickstarter to fund the game has soared through $500,000. You can see the current money count on the pitch page.
The Tales of the Valiant preview has 4 core classes, lineages, heritages, backgrounds, some spells, creatures (new and old) as well as Talent and Luck expanded rules.
The Kickstarter points out that Tales of the Valiant is about keeping the 5th edition community independent. That’s, of course, now possible since WotC conceded defeat in the bloody battle over the OGL and will now open license parts of the 5e rules.
There are new elements in here, though, and that’s the second thing the pitch says. Next up is the fact that Kickstarter backers will get early access to private playtests. You can wait for the game to hit retail, but you’ll not be part of this initial phase except through the free playtest packets already out.
Importantly, there are also limited editions of Tales of the Valiant which will be a one-time print run and only available through the Kickstarter.
There’s also a Super Deluxe edition, equally limited.
Tales of the Valiant (ToV) keeps all the best of 5E D&D and adds a Kobold Press spin to the well-loved game. It combines the Creative Commons foundation of 5th Edition with new elements to create a powerful Kobold-style 5E with teeth.
You can support the project by offering cash and spreading the news.
