Crystal Dynamics took (back) control of Lara Croft from Square Enix earlier this month.
There’s been no impact on the official Lara Croft tabletop RPG, which was announced during the 25th Anniversary Celebrations for the game.
It’s later than expected, but here and entirely free.
The download (ZIP) bundle contains the 215-page RPG by Matthew Gaston and the 74-page Mark of the Phoenix campaign.
There are also character sheets, handouts, an explanation of what a tabletop RPG is and, in a sign of the times, streamer assets such as coming soon graphics for your Twitch channel.
In Lara Croft’s Tomb Raiders, players will assume the roles of fictional characters in the mysterious world of Tomb Raider. These characters work for Lara Croft, who has more leads to follow than she has time to follow them. Players will explore ancient sites to discover information and artifacts – guided by the campaign’s Raid Master.”
Campaigns will focus on knowledge, language, and investigative skills in addition to action-oriented skills to keep it true to the franchise roots. Lara Croft’s Tomb Raiders will include the core rulebook and the first campaign book, Mark of the Phoenix.”
The system uses d6, one per point of competence a character has, and successes are greater than the challenge target number.
The RPG was officially signed off by Crystal Dynamics when Matt Gaston, who works there, made the case that they should do it.
Matt, a senior technical designer at the company, said;
Writing this game allowed me to examine a world that is bigger than any video game can portray. Playing it with a group allowed me to see this big, mysterious world from the perspective of many different characters. I hope this game brings you more of the mystery and adventure that Tomb Raider fans love!
It’s an officially approved game, but it is not canon, and that’s a point Crystal Dynamics also make.
Artists Kameliya Minkova and Johann Blaise worked on the gorgeous digital RPG.
