FATE publisher Evil Hat Productions are crowdfunding a Forged in the Dark Game where you play a Magical Girl (think Sailor Moon) resisting an oppressive society.
Curious? There’s a free to download preview of 50 pages of content. There’s a crowdfunding campaign on BackerKit.
Designed by Andrew Gillis and inspired not just by Sailor Moon byt anime and stories like Steven Universe and The Vision of Escaflowne, Girl by Moonlight is a multi-genre RPG about denying who you really are. That’s heartbreaking.
The RPG is also about fighting for what you believe in and the power of building relationships, and that’s uplifting.
Four playsets can also come with the game. One inspired by Sailor Moon and Steven Universe in which you try and reclaim a rotten world, one of Mecha that’s more like Diebuster, a grimdark one of betrayal ala Puella Magi Madoka Magica and one of pop culture and desire like Paprika.
As a Magical Girl you will clutch your tragic struggles tight, seeking to score defiant triumphs against the darkness of an oppressive society. The game reinterprets the classic examples of the genre to create an allegory for self-discovery and queer identity. The text uses ‘magical girl’ as a shorthand, but your magical girls need not be girls, necessarily, but people whose identities put them at the margins.
Those who back Girl by Moonlight at $15 or more will get the PDF and a Print on Demand edition, which will come via DriveThruRPG. That also includes a Roll20 Quick Start Module and f unds a community copy of the game.
At $30, backers can get a Roll20 Bundle upgrade or a hardcover upgrade, and this time, Evil Hat supports some outside-the-US shipping.
A limited edition features an alternative cover and endpapers, with bookmarks that will be exclusive to the crowdfunding campaign. That unlocks at $45.
The standard edition plus those jumpstarts are added at $50, as they’re not included by default. If you want the limited edition with the folios, back at $65.
There are add-ons and a higher tier. That higher tier is the Transcendent Girl Bundle which comes with both editions of the hardback game.
Evil Hat Productions estimated a January 2024 delivery for the project.
