A new Spider-Verse short, entitled The Spider Within has just had its premiere at Annecy International Film Festival and Market – but it’s not what you might expect!
The short sees Miles Morales battle his own subconscious in a story that’s far more akin to horror than what we’re used to seeing.
Hey, I love horror, so this feels like a breath of fresh air – not that we need it, as we’re still reeling from the incredible Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is already beating its predecessor Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse at the box office. What a great time to be a spider(man), am I right?!
Well, at least in our universe, watching on a screen. It seems Morales is finding the pressure of being Spider-Man a little harder to deal with, hence what this short is all about with the likes of sleep paralysis rearing its ugly head – and can we really blame the kid?
Here’s what Director Jarelle Dampier told The Wrap:
“We’ve never been able to have that slice-of-life moment because the movies are so big and excellent and breathtaking. I think horror is just one of those great down-on-the-street-level genres that you can use to just get intimate and find out what really makes this character tick, what makes them scared, and what are they going to do to get through it.”
I for one think this sounds like a great little addition to the films, and I can’t wait to be able to watch it!
As of now, I can’t tell you where you’ll be able to watch The Spider Within yet – but you’ll be the first to know when I do!
In the meantime, you can still go and see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in cinemas right now.
