Veteran developer and Final Fantasy 16’s battle director Ryota Suzuki has proudly declared the game to be his “personal masterpiece”.
But going by the headline, you may have gathered that’s not all that’s caught our attention about this story.
Suzuki, who has previously worked on Devil May Cry 5, Dragon’s Dogma, and Monster Hunter, said the team “put priority on designing this game’s battle system to appeal to those who previously have not played or are not well versed in action games.”
He continued:
I hope that those who have never played an action game before can go and try out Final Fantasy 16. I hope this game will give you a chance to experience the allure that an action game can bring.
I’m sorry. I know. But the words ‘Final Fantasy‘ and ‘action game’ still feel quite unnatural to be writing.
I mean, we knew it was an action RPG, and they’ve gotten rid of the turn-based system completely. It’s been hailed as ‘breaking the cycle’ – in a good way.
It’s also been referred to as feeling “less like Final Fantasy than Final Fantasy 15 did”. We know there’s real-time fighting, and fighting solo within a group – and you also get a dog! Dogs are good!
It also looks abso-fuckin’-lutely glorious. But I feel weird about it being called an ‘action game’. Maybe it’s just me.
What are Final Fantasy fans going to do with this? Well, maybe it’ll be a breath of fresh air to the franchise.
The Metro have even boldly suggested the game ‘might just have what it takes to move the franchise kicking and screaming into the modern gaming world’.
… Or maybe y’all will have to wait until the next Final Fantasy 7 remake instalment, which is also coming soon.
What are you thinking so far about Final Fantasy 16? Should it be more action and less like the FF games we’ve come to know and love? Will you be straight out buying it when it’s released on June 22nd – or will you wait for the reviews?
