Netflix has released the teaser trailer for intense religious dramatic thriller series called The Chosen One; an adaptation of comic book series American Jesus from Mark Millar and Peter Gross.
Originally named Chosen, the comic first came out in 2004 and was based around a 12-year-old boy who discovered he was somehow gifted with the same powers as Jesus Christ. His destiny? To face the Antichrist.
The adaptation is directed by Everado Gout (Marvel’s Luke Cage) and stars Tenoch Huerta (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever). Dianna Agron (Glee), is co-showrunning with Leopoldo Gout (Molly’s Game).
It’s a bit of an odd one. The teaser trailer looks pretty intense:
Here’s the official synopsis:
Jodie, a twelve-year-old boy in Baja California, suddenly discovers he has Jesus-like powers: he can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! As the Evangelical and the Yaquí leaders in town try to get him to use his powers to save mankind, all Jodie wants to do is impress the girl he likes and stand up to his bullies. As Jodie struggles and eventually comes to terms with his destiny, everything gets thrown for a loop when he realizes he discovers the truth around his identity.
As someone who hadn’t really heard of the comics, and going into this with completely fresh eyes, I’m not really sure what to make of it. Apart from, it’s certainly different!
The Chosen One is set for a Netflix release on August 16th. Will you be watching?
