There’s no single WOIN (What’s Old is New) RPG rule book as there are three. There’s NEW for sci-fi, up to version 1.2 and a mithral bestseller and NOW for modern games and a platinum bestseller. What tier do you think the fantasy book has reached? O.L.D. also v1.2, is also platinum.
Now, there’s going to be a new option as EN Publishing has smashed crowdfunding goals for a WOIN Starter Set.
WOIN RPG was released in 2016, and many, like myself, associate it with EN Publishing’s Judge Dredd and the Worlds of 2000 AD license. WotC’s OGL wobble may have given What’s OLD is New a fresh lease of life.
There’s a free to download preview (PDF link) of NOW to check out if you’re curious.
Of course, Starter Sets, to a degree, are about addressing that curiosity, too, while also managing the complexity of getting started in a new RPG. If EN Publishing meet its obligations, and they have got an excellent record for doing so, the new boxed set will have the following;
- A 68-page softcover rulebook (including a bestiary)
- Three 20-page softcover adventures (fantasy, modern, sci-fi)
- Three double-sided poster-sized battlemaps
- Over 60 cardboard tokens for characters and monsters
- 18 pre-generated character handouts
- 8 six-sided dice
- Virtual Tabletop asset pack (tokens and maps)
- OGL, CC, & ORC open licenses
The starter box rules also feature WOIN’s innovative countdown mechanic, and a streamlined version of the acclaimed freeform magic system which allows you to devise your spells on the fly! You’ll also find an introduction to WOIN’s psionics and chi rules, and a selection of fantasy, modern, and sci-fi equipment such as mithril shirts, jetpacks, and hoverboards.
Backers who pony up £15 to support the successful indie publisher will get a PDF copy of the Starter Set. A digital box set, if you will.
The £24 (about $30) also gets the physical box, but EN Publishing can’t ship everywhere.
Or, if you want to skip ahead, £50 is the tier at which backers get the Starter Set PDF and the full rules for all three games.
Ergo, the £120 tier is the one which gets the physical box set and the hardcovers of the whole game books.
There are higher tiers, £150 or £300 for the PDF or physical copies as well for everything WOIN has ever published.
EN Publishing is shipping the digital versions when ready, estimated to be in August. The physical books are likely to miss Christmas, coming in January 2024.
