LySandra Vuong (aka Explodikid) has earned more than 21 million reads and an incredible 630,000 followers for their Webtoon comic book Covenant.
Publisher Oni Press has landed a deal to take the digital series and bring the first three volumes to print in April. There’s an all-new cover from Vuong commissioned just for the print run.
LySandra explained;
Covenant combines classic shounen manga tropes with fantasy Catholicism to tell an action-packed story in which angels talk to us and demons walk among us. Covenant is an unconventional comic. It’s supernatural, a little blasphemous, a little sexy, and unapologetically queer.”
In a world where priests are as heavily armed as soldiers, Ezra, a powerful exorcist, struggles with his faith. When God intervenes and sends him on a mission to protect Sunny, an outwardly typical college student, Ezra is sceptical. But Sunny is not as ordinary as he seems. He has a dark past and hidden secrets that could endanger him and Ezra.
Ezra and Sunny are forced to work together to fight off demonic forces, but they clash over their different personalities and beliefs. Ezra’s sunny sarcasm rubs Sunny the wrong way, and Sunny’s closed-off demeanour makes it difficult for Ezra to connect with him. Yet, as much as they bicker and try to keep each other at arm’s length, they are drawn to each other.
With his church under scrutiny and the threat of war on the horizon, Ezra must find his conviction in time to keep Sunny safe. Will Sunny even accept his help? Or will they both suffer the consequences?
Oni Press Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn added,
Covenant takes the exorcist sub-genre that has made stories like Constantine so beloved into a refreshing and modern direction with action sequences that recall the flare of shounen manga like Blue Exorcist and the slow burn romance of a Kaori Yuki or CLAMP series. We can’t wait to introduce a brand new audience to the powerful and unique storytelling of debut creator LySandra Vuong.”
