A few weeks back E-Win got in touch, and their site says America’s number 1 heavy-duty gaming chair brand.
No, there’s no new gaming chair in Geek Native’s HQ, but their email did make me think about the uniquely geeky furniture. At least, it used to be uniquely geeky. Throughout the lockdown, everyone on Twitch or who might remotely be near a streaming camera seemed to get one. They’ve gone mainstream, I’m sure, but I was less certain whether they had hit the ceiling of the hype cycle.
For example, E-Win’s Champion Series starts at about $360 and can add about $100 to that.
The Champion Series and Flash XL are E-Win’s bestsellers. What I was curious about was whether people were still buying. Prime Day (which is heckin’ two-days) gives me a chance to look at the discounts. I can’t see US prices, but there are gaming chairs in UK’s Prime Day (which ends shortly, by the way).
The discounts are mixed. Amazon doesn’t seem to encourage people to splash the cash for your standard chairs, suggesting that the gaming chairs are selling well enough. For example,
- The Yoleo Gaming Chair is usually £130, and in Prime, it’s reduced to £100.
- The GTFORCE PRO GT is typically around £150 and reduced to £120 on Prime Day.
- AutoFull’s C3 Ergonomic, which is all tarted up, is reduced from £300 to about £240.
E-Win is also running sales for Prime Day, with the Calling Series Ergonomic reduced from $359 to $269. You can’t find E-Win on Amazon UK; the brand isn’t over here yet.
So, do you think everyone has bought a gaming chair already? E-Win doesn’t think so. A spokesperson with the manufacturer told me;
The gaming chair market is likely to continue its growth trajectory, driven by the increasing popularity of esports and online gaming, as well as the growing awareness about the health benefits of ergonomic gaming chairs. This growth is expected to be particularly strong in the Asia Pacific region, which is home to some of the largest and fastest-growing gaming markets in the world.
You might have noticed that the more expensive chairs seemed to have the most significant percentage discounts. E-Win is thinking about that, or at least has found research to support that. I was also told;
As the gaming chair market matures, consumers are likely to become more discerning and demand more advanced features in their chairs. This could include things like advanced lumbar support, adjustable armrests, and built-in speakers. Manufacturers that can offer these features at competitive prices are likely to see the strongest growth in the market.
So, is it time for that new gaming chair?
It is a good time to buy one, yes.
However, E-Win’s comment reminds us that “chair technology” might edge forward in due course. I doubt it’ll be relentlessness, but I can see that the 2023 new releases have better specs than the 2021 designs. If you don’t really need a chair and are tempted to wait, I’d wait.
It’s a bit like smartphones, where fewer and fewer of us race out to buy the latest model. We upgrade when we need to.
Cleaning your gaming chair
I don’t need a new gaming chair, and I only considered it because my current John Lewis purchase from a lifetime ago is so dog-eared and dusty. E-Win helped, though; they pointed out that I could clean it!
I countered that cleaning a gaming chair was harder than it looks! I don’t want to ruin the material or fight with spring-loaded mechanisms. E-Win kindly provided five tips for cleaning gaming chairs.
1. Regularly vacuum or dust your gaming chair: Dust, crumbs, and other debris can accumulate on your gaming chair over time, so it’s important to keep it clean. Use a vacuum or dusting brush attachment to remove any dirt or debris on the surface of the chair.
2. Spot clean spills and stains: If you spill something on your gaming chair, it’s important to clean it up right away. Use a damp cloth to blot the spill and then use a dry cloth to absorb any excess moisture. For more stubborn stains, you can use a mild detergent or upholstery cleaner.
3. Use a leather conditioner: If your gaming chair is made of leather, it’s important to use a leather conditioner to keep it soft and supple. Apply the conditioner to a clean cloth and then rub it into the leather in a circular motion.
4. Check and tighten screws: Over time, the screws and bolts on your gaming chair can loosen. Check them periodically and tighten any that are loose to ensure the chair remains stable and secure.
5. Store your gaming chair properly: If you’re not using your gaming chair for an extended period of time, it’s important to store it properly to prevent any damage. Cover the chair with a dust cover or plastic sheet to keep it clean and protected from dust and other debris.
