Modiphius publish the tabletop RPG Star Trek Adventures. I don’t think the game was in Amazon’s Prime Day, but I notice stock levels are low in the UK.
Sometimes, low is good; sometimes, one is better. A new TTRPG in the Star Trek Adventures line announced by the British publisher this week is all about solo play. Captain’s Log is a Star Trek RPG you play by yourself.
The game uses the mechanic of the Captain’s Log, that infamous James T. Kirk narrative method, to bring people up to speed and reveal what’s happening in the characters’ minds. In the Captain’s Log Star Trek game, the solo player writes their Log and details the crew’s adventures, recording progress, challenges, and disasters. The game uses a streamlined version of the 2d20 Star Trek Adventures RPG rules and isn’t just a pretend diary.
In the game, players can create or randomly generate their own missions. Once a mission is chosen, players will decide on their crew’s actions to complete it. The story will unfold as players succeed or fail, providing unexpected twists and turns along the way.
Star Trek Adventures: Captain’s Log can be played solo or cooperatively with friends. If playing solo, players will take on the role of captain and be responsible for making all the decisions. If playing cooperatively, players will work together as a team to complete the mission.
Star Trek Adventures gamemasters can use the random story tables in Captain’s Log to generate hours of memorable adventures with new alien species to and lost civilizations in them.
While sometimes solo is best, Modiphius have also gone for numbers with Captain’s Log, as there are four editions. Each edition is for a particular Star Trek show, and means the game covers Star Trek from the 21st to the 32nd century.
Test your knowledge by matching the combadge on the book’s cover to the right season! The four flavours of solo Star Trek RPG are;
- Original Series,
- Next Generation,
- Deep Space Nine,
- Discovery
Each edition of Star Trek Adventures: Captain’s Log is 326 pages, digest-sized and full colour. You can pre-order now, and physical books are expected to ship in August, with PDFs being delivered as soon you complete the online purchase.
