You may have heard of the iconic sci-fi RPG Traveller and its many editions. Do you have a copy?
Classic Traveller is a science fiction role-playing game (RPG) initially published in 1977 by Game Designers’ Workshop (GDW). It is a tabletop game where characters journey through star systems, engaging in exploration, ground and space battles and interstellar trading. Players assume various roles, such as humans, robots, aliens, or genetically engineered species. Various literary works influence the game and emphasize commerce, sociological stratification, and a mix of low and high technology. The setting is centred around the human-dominated Third Imperium, a feudalistic interstellar empire.
Classic Traveller was published in three booklets: Characters and Combat, Starships, and Worlds and Adventures. These booklets contained all the rules needed to play the game, along with adventures. The game was later expanded with supplements, including new rules, adventures, and settings.
Traveller’s anniversary is July 22, when it was released at Origins.
Perhaps that birthday is why the Classic Traveller Facsimile Edition is free to download. It’s usually $20 and is a platinum bestseller. The PDF and softcover combo is also reduced to an impressive $9 on DriveThruRPG.
The Facsimile Edtion is the original text of the 1981 print and is based on images Scan of Books 1-2-3 with errata and corrections inserted. While the download is the product of optical character recognition, it has been slightly enhanced with margins, for example, altered.
Game Designers’ Workshop will be attending Gen Con. Modern fans of the classic have also been alerted to the Kickstarter for a Small Craft 3D Printing File from 2nd Dynasty.
