A new take on Bram Stoker‘s Dracula – The Last Voyage of the Demeter – is hitting cinemas in just over a week, and we’ve got a behind-the-scenes featurette to show you.
And, despite the title of this post, it’s looking good! We at Geek Native love the dark, gritty take on vampires, like how vampires are supposed to be seen – none of this glittery, sparkly nonsense!
The Last Voyage of the Demeter does just that, and is based on the creepy captain’s log from Dracula. In other words, it’s how Dracula survived on a merchant ship and what horrors bestowed the crew whilst Dracula sailed here to the UK – apparently with his 50 crates of ‘dirt’.
Interestingly, I was watching this featurette thinking that: ‘Huh, xenomorph-obsessed me is getting some Alien vibes from this’ – then at around 1:02 into the featurette, director André Øvredal actually comes out and says exactly what I was thinking.
He says: “I really loved this Alien-style story set on the ocean in 1857 and with Dracula instead of the Alien monster.” — Well, you hit it spot on, André, because y’got me! That is EXACTLY the feel I was getting.
Watch the featurette below to see for yourselves:
Also, it did bother me slightly when producer Bradley J. Fischer states in the featurette that the chapter of Dracula travelling on the Demeter “hasn’t been told” – it bloody well has (bloody, get it?!) in the Dracula mini series (2020) broadcast on BBC1 and now also on Netflix.
The episode I’m talking about is called Blood Vessel and is the second episode in the series – just to be a persnickety old curmudgeon about this even further. You don’t get to pull the wool over my eyes, Mr Producer person! I know my Dracula well, damnit *shakes fist*
Mwahahahahahahaaaah… anyway, don’t you think they’re missing a trick by not getting this out for Halloween?
The film stars Corey Hawkins (In The Heights), David Dastmalchian (The Boogeyman), and Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones).
You’ll be able to catch it in cinemas from August 11th.
