Interstellar’s first Kickstarter is for a set of metal mechanical Rubik’s Cube-style. There’s about a month to run, and the campaign has hit funding targets.
There are some quirky shapes and corners to these dice, and easy to see why the four-person team of Interstellar found a large enough audience for their crowdfunding campaign.
These are complex dice to build, and the Kickstarter pitch makes it clear the Californian team know their stuff. There’s chat of mold carving, colouring and area utilisation.
In particular, the d10 and d10% are differently shaped. Interstellar says unique; I’m going to say rare. However, Interstellar also say their dice have exceptional “hand feel” and (guessing what that means) I believe them!
These dice sets come in at 228g. That’s heavy. Don’t use a scratch-prone glass table for these metal baddies – but would you?
You have five color options to choose from, but I recommend selecting one between gold and silver, and then one among red, blue, and gray. These colors utilize two different coloring techniques, resulting in distinct effects.
Metal dice can be expensive, and while Kickstarter shouldn’t be a retail experience, let’s see how the rewards for the tier supports shape up!
The silver wing set of 7 gaming dice is the first reward, which a few people have gone for, and that’s set to $50. Retail will be more expensive, the dice come in a metal box lined with foam and worldwide shipping is supported.
The Gold, Crimson, Stellar Mark and Relic sets are priced similarly. It’s just a matter of picking which you want. Backers are just edging in favour of Relic at the time of writing.
After two sets or do you want to be more generous? Back at the campaign with $88.
A few backers have gone for the $199, which gets them five sets; 4 of which are costed, one free, which means the dice cost is 59% of what they would be at retail.
Interstellar estimates a November 2023 delivery for the project, which feels delightful and ambitious.
