We’ve seen magnetic tabletop terrain tiles before. Still, Aetherflask’s Flaskworld campaign is getting a slot in Geek Native as their system seems to land in the sweet spot between affordability and desirability.
The Auckland-based group asked only for NZ$2,000 to bring their campaign to life, and with more than three weeks to go, they are 50% over that target. You can watch the numbers on the pitch page.
Aetherflask starts by explaining why cardboard, plastic titles with clips, paper and LCD screens aren’t in their sweet spot for them. It’s an empathic way to line up the problem.
The solution comes in the form of 3cm x 3cm tiles and magnets. The first release will be a dungeon theme and come with 1×1, 1×2 and 2×2 designs so you can build many different shapes.
The goal is to have eight different designs if all goes well.
We have created a tile based system that can be used for Tabletop RPG, and dungeon crawling games that supports Square bases. Each tile can be equipped with 4 magnets, one on each side, and with this, they snap on quite easily, without the fuss of any outside clips or other items to hold it together.
Backers can access the pledge manager with NZ$1, which is about £1 too.
While magnets are the clever bit, you can get the dungeon titles as a reward if you want to support the campaign. Backers with cash enough to pledge NZ$50, which is about £24, will get 1 set of magnet-free dungeon titles. Magnets can be added later.
Backers with contributions of NZ$80 get the set with magnets.
A magnet-free double combo unlocks at NZ$130 and with magnets at NZ$200.
Impressively, Aetherflask estimates a delivery date of November 2023 for the project.
