Everyone’s talking about the new Deadpool movie due out in May, which means we’re not only speculating about potential future story points and characters, we’re also revisiting older facts.
For instance, did you know that Ryan Reynolds paid $10,000 of his own money to wear a t-shirt with Bea Arthur on it in the first movie? He felt there shouldn’t be Deadpool without Bea. The money went to a charity chosen by Bea Arthur’s estate.
The latest fact that’s been dug up, this time by GeekTyrant is that the character of Dopinder, who drives a cab in the movies and is played by Karan Soni, is actually named after a real person in Reynolds’ past.
The actor talked about the tragic end of real-life Dopinder during a “Talks at Google” series seven years ago – but it was my first time hearing about it, so wanted to share:
Dopinder … that name comes from my friend in elementary school. I went to school with this guy named Dopinder, and we’re paying tribute to him. He was killed. He was struck by lightning, which is just utterly crazy. Dopinder is a tribute to this guy. He was a really cool guy. That was more information than you ever wanted.
This story was met with some nervous, slightly awkward laughter, which was Reynolds seemed fine with. He said: “They’re all laughing about it now.”
Deadpool 3 will be out in cinemas on May 3rd, 2024.
