Filmmaker Kevin Smith is doing a thing.
And that thing is, bizarrely, auctioning off his entire collection of original comic book art, including the covers and interior art from projects he’s working on over the years, along with other work from his personal collection.
Any comic book collectors reading this must be feeling very conflicted right now; in one sense, imagining the very act of getting rid of a collection this significant must garner some sympathy pains (it’d be like me getting rid of my dress collection), but in another… OPPORTUNITY AWAITS!
So, many of you may be reading this and wondering ‘why, Kevin?’. Well, according to Smith, he’s now living in a smaller New Jersey home near the movie theatre where he’s about to shoot his next film, The 4:30 Movie.
Here’s what Smith himself has to say:
My current reduction in home wall space is going to make some ardent comic collectors’ dreams come true! Own original interior art or killer covers from my Daredevil and Green Arrow runs! Pick through classic comic book graphics I’ve collected over the years! This will be the sale of the century, and a percentage of our proceeds will go to a scholarship fund at the Joe Kubert School!
Auction house Bodnar’s are handling the auction, and it’ll be an actual live auction that Smith will be participating in… somehow. This is all happening online on Wednesday, September 27th.
Smith’s collection includes some pretty sought after stuff, including all of Matt Wagner‘s covers for Green Arrow, which could reach around $1,500 to $3,000 each. Other pages from Smith’s collection include Batman, Hitman, Preacher, The Demon, Sandman, Daredevil, and more.
Fans will also get the chance to bid on the interior pages for Quick Stops, Smith’s recent Dark Horse Comics series set in the View Askewniverse.
Currently, a comprehensive online catalogue is coming together from the team at Bodnar’s, so you’ll be able to go and take a gander at the collection and strategise. Pre-bidding is already underway, and all lots will be starting at just $10.
This seems like a very cool, once-in-a-lifetime thing for people who collect comics, and I’m excited for all of you (okay, and maybe slightly worried for your bank accounts).
