Rusty Quill is the company behind the The Magnus Archives podcast, a weekly horror anthology set in the Magnus Institute.
Monte Cook Games now has a Cypher System-powered version of The Magnus Archives on the way, running the crowdfunding project on BackerKit. It’s the first tabletop RPG on the platform to cross a million Dollars in pledges, and you can join in, too.
The game is based on (all) five seasons of The Magnus Archives, so it contains spoilers.
If you want an early look, then there’s a free primer on DriveThruRPG.
The RPG lets PCs work alongside NPCs like Jonathan, Martin, Basira, Daisy and others and deal with situations with NotThem, the Anglerfish and the Man Upon the Stair.
New to the Cypher System, the Stress mechanic is very appropriate for this disturbing horror.
There are various pledge levels, as per Kickstarter or Indiegogo’s model;
Backers at the $30 tier get the PDF of The Magnus Archives RPG, and for $75 the print edition is added as well.
At $135, backers get upgraded to the limited deluxe edition of the game.
Suitable for groups, at $199, backers get the limited edition, the regular print edition, the GM’s Campaign Journal and five of both the Player’s Guide and Character Portfolios.
That’s not the top tier, as in addition to the retailers only one, there are two more.
Called “Avatar”, set at $279, backers also get a set of 12 Leitner bookplates, The Magnus Archives XP Deck and limited edition dice with a book safe presentation box.
Autographed editions of the limited deluxe and a print copy of A Guest for Mr.Spider are layered in, along with a set of 12 Magnus Institute file folders and early access are added at $349.
How many people have gone for that $349 tier? Over 1,500.
The game is expected to ship to backers in late 2024, although, horribly, we’re still warned of post-COVID delays.
