When I think about 1992, I think Shakespeare’s Sister’s hit song Stay With Me, Batman Returns, Nirvana’s album release of Nevermind… and Death Becomes Her.
In terms of films, it’s a classic cult favourite – and one of my favourite films ever, starring Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis.
And now the horror-comedy Death Becomes Her from Robert Zemeckis is finally, after all these years, about to be adapted as a stage musical! It’s coming in 2024, and I’ll be one of the first to buy a ticket (when it comes to the UK, at least!).
We have the description for you to take a gander at:
The musical comedy features an original score by Noel Carey and Julia Mattison and book by Marco Pennette. Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (Newsies) directs and choregraphs. The design team for the musical includes Derek McLane (Sets), Paul Tazewell (Costumes), Justin Townsend (Lights), Peter Hylenski (Sound), and Paul Kieve (Illusions). The Chicago staging is produced by Broadway In Chicago and Universal Theatrical Group.
And, of course, here’s the trailer (via Instagram):
If you’ve never seen the original Death Becomes Her, get thee to a streaming service quicksmart – what better excuse to watch it! And, I’m jealous of whoever’s about to watch it for the first time; it’s a real hoot.
The plot centres on lifelong rivals Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp, who are fighting to retain not only their youthful looks, but also plastic surgeon Ernest Menville (played by Willis). In their desperation to stay looking young, they both drink a mysterious purple potion that supposedly ensures they ‘live forever’ – unfortunately things take a disastrous turn for the worst when both of them suffer fatal accidents and have to live to face the hilarious consequences.
What do you think of Death Becomes Her getting turned into a musical? I personally love musicals, and so I’m 100% onboard! Let me know what you think in the comments.
