Over on BackerKit’s crowdfunding platform, Crossed Paths Press has raced through 1,000 backers and shattered their humble crowdfunding goal for the solo RPG Brambletrek.
Brambletrek set the goal small and scored big, and that’s a theme in the RPG. In the RPG, you can solo or play without a GM in a group; you’re a small mouse-like Gnawborn. You’re small, but your quest is epic. You can see progress on the pitch page.
As (potentially) a solo RPG, the system is a little different, encouraging you to reflect and find time for introspection in return for creativity. The book is a guide; you use it with writing gear and a deck of cards.
The Brambletrek book will serve as your guide to solo RPGs. It will offer prompts to aid your writing; interpreting these prompts is entirely up to you. This is your journey; you have the power and the requirement to shape it as you see fit without a GM.
I spoke to Ash in July and asked about the big vs. small and how Brambletrek seems to take a fresh look at the mundane. He told me that seeing the world from a new perspective can make even the most mundane items into danger.
From that, we got onto the four legacies in Brambletrek, and I was gifted to a little more insight (at least, as it was in July) about them;
The Seer – Blessed by the World Tree, Heimstre herself, you channel your ability to observe the world in a more arcane nature and wield the elements to aid you on your journey, your ability allows you to see into the future and change the course of your daily adventures potentially into something more favourable. But as will all, fate is not something to control and destiny may give you harsher outcomes.
The Scrapper – Scrappers are tough, fearless, and always ready to get their paws dirty. You’re known for your tenacity and physical prowess, enabling you to stand your ground against the many threats you may encounter. Your ability is ideal for combat encounters where you can use more attacks than normally allowed, giving you more chances to take down your opponent through sheer will.
The Storyteller – Storytellers are the heart and soul of the Gnawborn. You weave tales, sing songs, and bring cheer where there’s despair. You might captivate an audience with a thrilling story or soothe a wounded spirit with a song. You can also use your ability to talk your way out of combat with an enemy by appealing to their better nature or simply tricking them!
The Seeker – Seekers have a profound connection to nature and are excellent at surviving in the wilderness. You are a skilled tracker, able to find safe paths through dangerous terrains, and understand the world on a level that others simply cannot. You have the ability to overcome dangerous events by finding another way around the situation.
This remarkable book boasts a sturdy 300gsm cover, ensuring its durability as you face the perils that lie ahead. The internal pages, crafted from off-white recycled paper, create an otherworldly ambiance, transporting you further into the depths of your imagination. Throughout the book, you will discover captivating black and white illustrations, offering glimpses of the mesmerizing world and inspiring you to create an array of fascinating characters.
