Windmill Slam Games have a modest hit with Dark Encounters for tabletop RPGs. The Kickstarter promises grim and gloomy scenes for gaming groups mature enough to cope.
There’s a fortnight left on the crowdfunding clock, but the €500 goal has been met thrice over already. You can find out more or join in from the pitch page.
There’s a content warning on this Kickstarter, as it contains sexual images and references to death, drugs, religious fanaticism and mental illness.
Cautiously curious? There’s a free to download 16-page preview. There’s an early blank page there; keep scrolling for content, but note that the Kickstarter story has more explicit images.
We’re told that Dark Encounters is not (just) about shocking players as there’s magic, mystery and mythos in here. It’s a book inspired by the works of Lovecraft, but also The X-Files and Supernatural. That means these horrors fit both fantasy and contemporary settings.
The project will offer 50 encounter hooks and random tables, with a deck of cards included as an option.
The Dark Encounters team consists of Joran and Susi. They have worked together on several occasions, but this is their first project where it’s just the two of them. Their last project, Monsters & Magic 2: The Book of Cults, was funded via Kickstarter in 2021. Susi created the look and artwork for the Eventide cult, as well as for the Preacher class and the Session 0 handout at the end of the book.
Backers at €5 will get a PDF copy of the Dark Encounters book and a special mention, while those who can pledge €25 will also get the hardcover edition.
A handcrafted leather book cover is added, along with some other leather trinkets for backers at €89. As Windmill Slam Games say; it’s not your soul they’re after, just 89 euros.
The Dutch publisher estimates the digital copies will be out for October this year (Halloween, perhaps) and that leather cover version by the end of the year.
