I’ve been lucky enough to get a draft copy of Alan Bahr’s Ringbreaker comic. I like it a lot, although I’m not entirely sure where it’s going, but Issue #1 feels like a fast-forward to learn the lore and swiftly set up the epic story.
That’s the same Alan Bahr that tabletop RPG fans will know from Gallant Knight Games and other projects. I had no idea he was so talented! It’s sickening! (Only joking!)
Alan’s teamed up with the Argentia-based fantasy illustrator and comic artist Facundo Nehuén López for the project. Here’s a tip. If you like Facundo’s bold style, then they have an Inprnt store where you can buy it.
Where can you buy Ringbreaker? You can’t, not yet, as Hyperstar Comics has the project on Kickstarter. You can back the project, get the kudos and in from day one.
Hyperstar Comics is a small-press comics publisher, and, yes, it turns out that running businesses is another of Bahr’s talents as he is behind Hyperstar, too.
The world of Ringbreaker, Heidurgar, looks Norse and Viking, and the Oaths are magically real. People are oathsworn to Gods, the Gods to Dragons, and all this magic ties everything together horribly. People are compelled.
Sound like a great RPG setting? I think so, and I’m sure Alan does, too.
Of course, the Gods aren’t happy to be bound by the seven floating oathrings that loom in the sky. In issue #1, we meet brother and sister Revnah and Ahrne, who aren’t keen on being bound by Gods either.
The whole of Ringbreaker could be the vengeance quest triggered in the opening moments and a mighty road movie of a comic book, but I’m not sure I need another one of those in my life. Thankfully, Ringbreaker, under Alan’s narrative whirlwinds through Lord of the Rings-style treks through the snow, reaches a dramatic reveal and pushes on.
That’s why I’m curious about the direction of Issue #2. I feel like we’ve had the prologue, but a powerful and dynamic one.
“Powerful” and “Dynamic” are two words I’d quickly use to describe Facundo’s high-impact art, too. Bold colours, clever framing, and I’ll probably get murdered for this, but if Mike Mignola’s Hellboy vibe is Ravenloft, then Facundo’s Ringbreaker vibe is The Forgotten Realms. You can make the call yourself with the examples here.
On the Kickstarter, waiting for your Ringbreaker fix should not take long. The target goal has been met; there’s time to join, and backers get the PDF copy for $5. Hyperstar Comics estimates an October 2023 delivery.
There’s a physical tier with worldwide shipping support for $7. Want to go higher? There’s a $20 tier and all-in with the variant covers. Those print editions are slated for the end of the year.
