It’s apparently the end of an era; Netflix has just shipped out its final DVDs in the mail, as its longstanding DVD shipping service finally closes forever. Wait – WHAT?!?! They were… still doing that?
Yes. Yes they were. They have been doing this solidly since 1998, and has shipped over five billion DVDs in that time. And now… no more.
In an emotional goodbye to the service, the company has released a video full of nostalgia and charm, taking a look back over the many years it’s been sending us out movies we love to watch – long before the days of ‘Netflix and chill’, I might add!
The video was released with the following note:
We’ve always loved entertainment and that little red envelope remains an enduring symbol of our mission to make it better for every member. DVDs will forever be in our DNA.
Here’s the video – be warned, it may provoke an unexpected emotional reaction.
*Sniff* Why am I sad at this?! Why oh why did that somehow manage to pull at my heartstrings?! For a MAILING SERVICE I didn’t even know still existed, and that I haven’t used in so many years!
Maybe it’s just because I’m getting old and saying goodbye to things that were once a staple of past life. That’s me getting pretty deep for a Friday night, so let’s stahp that before it goes any further.
The first movie Netflix ever sent out was Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. Deadline has revealed that the final DVD ever to be sent out by the company was 2010’s True Grit, from Joel and Ethan Coen.
I guess that’s that, then.
