Parable Games, known for the horror TTRPG Shiver, shattered their Kickstarter funding goal for Don’t Play This Game.
Don’t Play This Game is a solo game with a pitch that might worry you’re about to be the unlucky one in The Ring. Surely, you’ll turn back and not watch.
You don’t need friends to play this solo game, but you might need one to pass the cursed chain letter RPG on to. Will you have friends afterwards? That’s uncertain.
The whole Kickstarter pitch stays in character, with Charlie Menzies of Parable writing as if they’re experiencing a horror crisis.
Don’t Play This Game will be a 100+ A5 hardcover. It’s a game that asks you to create a record of your game play, the record is your game play, and while that’s a novel feature
The game is simple – when you begin playing, an Event will happen to you. Then you record it. What happened? How’d it make you feel? What effect did it have on you? Sometimes words, sometimes photos, whatever the Entity asks. Once an Event is completed the Entity will select another. This repeats and your story unfolds until either you complete the game and are free, or you lose and, well, then really bad things happen…
Backers who offer £15 in support will get a digital version of Don’t Play This Game and applicable stretch goals.
At £30, there’s the physical core book added to the rewards, and Parable can offer global shipping from within Brexit Britain.
The Notebook of events to record curses also becomes physical and is in the loot pile at £59.
£99 tier backers get dice and the Inheritance Expansion box set, too, but only one of three versions. At £175, backers get all three.
There are retailer tiers, but those generous and interesting backers who can pledge £799 can become part of the story.
The campaign closes on the 2nd of November, and the delivery of the game is December 2024.
