Can D&D’s 5e system do horror? Can a first-time Kickstarter break $1m? What about $2m? Yes, yes, and it looks likely!
Legends of Avantris’ The Crooked Moon has nearly a whole month to go, has $1,950,000 pledged, and over 9,500 backers for their 400+ pages of 5e folk horror. You can see progress at the pitch page.
Inspired by horror films and Halloween, The Crooked Moon is set in a world of eternal night, and since the rules are 5e, there might be player options your DM allows in other settings.
The Crooked Moon is a set of adventures set in Druskenvald, a realm always on the verge of the witching hour and with places like Wickermoor Hollow where the locals follow the Old Ways while forgotten horrors stalk nearby.
There’s the Ghostlight Express adventure for characters at levels 1 to 13 in the 400+ pages. The “Fateweaving System” also gets PCs to intersplice their backgrounds, tying them together in the narrative.
The setting also has lineages that evoke Halloween, such as the pumpkin-headed Harvestborn, the rat-like Plagueborn and the murky Deepborn.
There are tarot, minis and loads of options for fans of the YouTube channel pushing this 5e crowdfunding campaign to go for.
Face off against creatures of the night with 66+ Folkloric Monsters that require more than basic combat to defeat. Investigate local Myths and Legends, discover Secrets and Superstitions, and Perform Rituals in thrilling encounters beyond just rolling for initiative.
Backers supporting the $30 tier will get a PDF copy with all the applicable stretch goals, including the music for the setting.
The tarot only is there at $60, and it’s popular with nearly 400 backers already.
Alternatively, the hardcover of The Crooked Moon is unlocked at $65 with the PDF included.
At $90, there’s a digital deluxe tier, which includes the VTT assets, a digital tarot deck and STL files for the boss minis.
Backers who can afford $120 can access the deluxe hardcover, which comes in premium black faux leather with crimson foil embossed details.
Over 2,000 gamers have found $150 (about £123) for the core box. That’s the digital and hardcover editions, Wicker Man sharp-edged resin dice, the Horned King dice bag, GM screen, card decks, a tactical map pack and a cloth map of Wickermoor Hollow.
Yep, there’s a deluxe box supported by over 1,000 backers, each paying $295 for the core box upgraded to the deluxe hardcover with glow-in-the-dark metal dice, pin sets and tarot deck.
Mini cans can be backed at $325 for physical minis of the 11 bosses, complete with the STL files and bases.
Want it all? That’s the $750 all-in-box, and nearly 1,000 gamers have gone there.
Legends of Avantris, who will likely be very busy now, estimate September 2024 for delivery for the tiers.
