Halloween is coming, and PR firms are busy filling blogger inboxes with Google Search Trends inspired ‘research’ on what will be popular this year.
Geek Native talked to HalloweenCostumes.com instead, who have sales data, and a press kit based on sales and industry knowledge.
Any surprises? I don’t think so. We’re going to get some Barbie action this year. It might be the most pink Halloween of the decade.
Sure enough, HalloweenCostume’s own ideas pages start with Barbie costume ideas, and the popular ones are all retro, before expanding on to Five Nights at Freddy’s and Legend of Zelda costumes.
I’m more interested in the company’s exclusives which include this Little Mermaid Ursula, an incredible men’s Alice Through the Looking Glass time costume, a plus-size Jack Links and the two-kids Toy Story slinky dog.
Movies and Video Games
2023 has a great lineup of films and video games that will inspire Halloween costumes. Expect to see a lot of Barbies, Kens, and Spider-Man variants, as well as costumes based on the Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
TV Shows
The Wednesday series on Netflix has created a resurgence of Addams Family fans, so expect to see a lot of Wednesday Addams costumes this year. Bluey and PAW Patrol are popular kids’ shows with costumes that will surely be a hit with toddlers.
Classics
Horror movie classics like Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Ghostface, Chucky, and Jason are always popular Halloween costumes. Funny costumes, particularly inflatable costumes, are also trending this year.
Group Costumes
Super Mario and Star Wars are classic group costume themes that are always popular. Harry Potter is also popular, thanks to the Hogwarts Legacy video game. Bridgerton, Grease, A League of Their Own, and Peaky Blinders also inspire retro and historical group costumes.
Inclusive Costumes
Costume brands are offering more plus sizes and inclusive costumes than ever before. These new adaptive costumes are designed to meet the needs of more people, including those with disabilities.
Pet Costumes
Pets are also getting an upgrade in costume options this year. Families seek ways to include their animal members in the Halloween fun.
Halloween Decor
As the pandemic ends, people are more interested in creating amazing Halloween scenes in their homes than ever. Oversized décor, skeletons, animatronics, and various types of light-up decor are all popular choices.
