Freshly released in France is The Animal Kingdom, a sci-fi movie from Thomas Cailley written by Cailley and Pauline Munier.
It’s a personal apocalypse as in the near future, a wave of mutation hits humanity. People begin to transform into animals, and some of our characters vanish into the forest.
Many consider the furry-like mutants a threat and are sent to specialised centres to stop their mutations and control their violent tendencies.
When a convoy transporting hybrids to a new facility crashes in a forest, paranoia spreads in the local community as the surviving creatures scatter into the wild. François and his 16-year-old son Emile desperately search for François’ missing wife, Lena, who disappeared after the crash.
As François clings to the family’s past, he progressively loses his grip on Emile, who has started noticing transformations in his body. Emile’s fate becomes increasingly uncertain, but as he secretly bonds with the creatures he meets in the forest, he opens his eyes to their humanity. Emile and François are forever changed, even as the authorities close in.
It’s unclear whether The Animal Kingdom will get a US, UK or Canadian release. It may skip to a streaming service like iPlayer, Hulu, Netflix or Disney+. It may skip even that.
However, The Animal Kingdom is reviewing well; we might get the film over here.
