Makapatag is a serialist and poet from Manila who has partnered with Dyl Briones, Fae, Pam Punzalan and several SEAsian artists on the tabletop Gubat Banwa.
Gubat Banwa is a war drama, an RPG of martial arts and a game set in the Sword Isles inspired by tales from Southeast Asia. The campaign target was set at $40,000, and that’s been met and thrashed. You can see the latest tally on Kickstarter.
The opening paragraph pitch for Gubat Banwa mentions violence. Okay, here’s the quote:
Take on the role of the luminous Kadungganan and engage in tradition, love, and violence, violence, violence!
The promise is for a tactical martial arts fantasy RPG set in a Southeast Asia-inspired world and built for drama. Just to be clear, the way to deal with that drama is violence.
You are Kadungganan, a warrior guided by the Umalagad through the world. They are the arbiter of your fate, and you are a warrior larger than life itself. Your intricate, complex relationships will play out in the political game of debts and bonds. A son kills his father for defecting to the enemy nation. A daughter flees to the mountains to escape the expectations of an unfair system. In the eye of a storm on a mountain’s peak, best friends duel as ideology drives them against each other.
Backers can support the project, getting their name in the book for a pledge of $5.
The basic edition, Maharlika, unlocks at $25. That provides the digital PDF of Gubat Banwa.
Datu, the hardcover, is the pledge reward at $60, which also comes with the digital edition.
There’s a deluxe edition of the PDF as well, and that’s unlocked at $80, which also includes a digital art book and earlier access to the official soundtrack. That Gubat Banwa album is by ONEFLOOR!
As you might expect, there’s also a hardcover deluxe, which also comes with a physical art book plus the musical goodies.
A box set includes the hardcover, quickstart, The Sword Devil booklet, 15 character standees, combat grid, status effect counter and the umalagad screen.
The top pledge is $1,000, including the full set and the ability to design and attack.
