The trailer has just been released for one of the most exciting and promising movies I’ve anticipated in quite a while; American Fiction, starring Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, The Batman).
The trailer looks absolutely hilarious, and the film has already generated a lot of Oscar buzz, as least partially down to Wright’s brilliant performance. Watch the trailer below to find out why!
The official synopsis reads:
American Fiction is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from the ‘Black’ entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish ‘Black’ book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.
The film also features a great cast lineup.
As well as Wright starring as as Monk, the film boasts an impressive cast, with John Ortiz (Silver Linings Playbook), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish), Issa Rae (Insecure), Keith David (Armageddon), Erika Alexander (Living Single), Leslie Uggams (Deadpool), Adam Brody (Shazam!), and Sterling K. Brown (This is Us).
American Fiction is out in US cinemas from December 15th – I’m still waiting for info for a UK release date, but I’ll keep you updated.
What do you think – are you excited about American Fiction? Do you smell the slight whiff of an Oscar win just from watching the trailer alone?
