According to recent reports, Brie Larson may be reconsidering her role in the MCU, after feeling disillusioned by a toxic backlash from fans. And can we really blame her?
Larson – who will reprise her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in The Marvels – has had to deal with perhaps more than her fair share of critics (and trolls) since she first took on the role.
Previously, the Captain Marvel actress has responded to the backlash with: “I don’t have time for it:”
I don’t have time for it. The things that I have extra time to really look at are, like, Am I eating healthy food? Am I drinking water? Am I meditating? Have I called my mom today?
Author Joanna Robinson indicated there could be a deeper problem in the MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios book:
The future of those Marvel icons was unclear. The departure of franchise anchors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson had already taken its toll, as had the shocking loss of Chadwick Boseman, but other MCU stalwarts were heading for the exits. The Guardians of the Galaxy cast went on a farewell tour, Brie Larson grew disillusioned, and Marvel tussled with Sony in a custody battle over Tom Holland.
Via a recent episode of The Watch podcast, Robinson elaborated on her previous comments even more to claim that Larson doesn’t even want to play Carol Danvers anymore. Here’s what she said:
[Marvel Studios] put Brie Larson in [a prominent place in the MCU]. I don’t know if Brie Larson was the wrong person for the role necessarily. But the toxic backlash means that Brie Larson doesn’t want to play Carol Danvers anymore.
Upon being asked about whether she’d return to play Captain Marvel again after The Marvels movie, Larson replied with another question:
I don’t know, does anyone want me to do it again?’ Marvel had expected that Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man would be the trio of star characters leading the MCU into a new millennium, but that was no longer a future it could rely on.
Whether Larson will actually reprise the role, most likely depends on what’s in store for The Marvels and how it does at the box office. I think there’s every chance she’ll come back if things are looking good, but she very well be pondering her role in the MCU if it doesn’t do so well.
