The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness RPG was a big part of my school life. I’ve a cherished 11th printing and most supplements, and I recall the controversy.
Early editions had homosexuality as a possible mental illness and sexual deviation, but later editions covered the offending paragraphs. While it’s not mentioned in the new Kickstarter from Palladium Books, I presume it has been banished to the troubled past. The crowdfunder now has over 3,000 backers, nearly 1/2 a million dollars pledged against a 1/4 million target. You can see progress on the pitch page.
The game is based, as you’d expect, on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and on the grim version. Eastman and Laird were involved in the first and are involved in this.
The Kickstarter will make two deluxe hardcover books, which will be remastered, with rule clarifications and updated to full colour. Bonus material includes new art and tributes.
The game lets you pick your mutant animal, using a point system to balance the differences so a ninja hamster can be as a practical part of a group as a ninja tiger.
Kevin Eastman, a co-creator of the comics, said;
This is incredibly exciting! I am 1000% onboard to help bring this historic and original TMNT Role-Playing Game series back in a truly deluxe collector’s edition that will thrill original fans and open the door for new ones.
I’ve made all my archives available for expanded behind-the-scenes content as well as a few top secret surprises you need to be part of. Stay tuned!
Backers at $50 get a physical reward, the TMNT & Other Strangeness redux edition rulebook and access to an extensive list of optional add-ons. The variant edition cover is the reward at $60.
At $100, there’s the redux edition of the core rules and the important Transdimensional Adventures supplement. Yes, because in this word, you could also have a Teenage Mutant Ninja T-Rex.
There are also “Back White & Red” Editions of both, and they’re the rewards at $110. Alternatively, if you want the variant covers of both as the reward for the $120 tier.
At $160, another edition appears, and that’s the “Mutagen Green Edition”, and the two books come with an exclusive art print and poster. Minis are added at $300, and dice sets, accessories and a GM screen at $390.
Hardcore collector? $888 gets you all the editions and accessories. Tier tiers have sold out, but there are retailer options.
The campaign closes on the 29th and the books are slated for September 2024.
