Zack Snyder‘s no stranger to building worlds with his storytelling, but it looks like he’s taking his Rebel Moon franchise to the next level.
Coming soon to Netflix is Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire followed by Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver – but that only seems to be the tip of the iceberg.
Snyder recently told GameRadar that we can also expect a Rebel Moon animated series (currently in development), an animated comic book, and a narrative podcast – and all of these things are taking place earlier in the timeline than the events of the first film.
Here’s what he had to say:
I’m the gatekeeper for what’s possible. I’m the only one who knows where the whole story is going, and I do have it mapped all the way. We’re doing a narrative podcast, and an animated comic book, and an animated series. They all take place before the events of the movie. So you can start to understand the vastness of the mythology that we’ve been working on.
Hmmm, well it’s true that it gives a wee indication of the vastness, but the real kicker is the 800-year timeline revealed by co-writer Kurt Johnstad:
The world is very, very detailed and fleshed out. There’s hundreds and hundreds of pages of documents of methodology and mythology and lore. The timeline goes back 800 years, from our movies.
Apparently this humungous timeline takes up a massive 12ft whiteboard in the writers’ room, featuring the full Rebel Moon timeline. To highlight the situation even further, Johnstad explained:
There’s a ruler with inches underneath that whiteboard, and the two movies are literally two or three inches of that entire 12-foot span.
Woah. It sounds like a whole lot of work and planning is going into this whole universe, and if anyone can pull this off, Zack can. I’m quite excited for these movies!
A Child of Fire will be out on Netflix on December 22nd, with The Scargiver set to be released next spring.
