The master of horror, Stephen King, has apparently written a sequel to his classic 1981 story Cujo; it’s called Rattlesnakes, and it will be part of his new upcoming short story collection You Like it Darker.
King has talked about Rattlesnakes before, and here’s what he said:
I just wrote a long story called ‘Rattlesnakes.’ And it involves, at one part, twins who are only four years old… falling into a rattlesnake pit. And the snakes get ’em. It’s a terrible scene. This novella that I’ve just written, ‘Rattlesnakes’… is actually a sequel to Cujo.
As for the official description, it reads: “Rattlesnakes is a sequel to Cujo, in which a grieving widower travels to Florida to find respite and instead receives an unexpected inheritance, with important attendant connections.”
The book will be a collection of 12 short stories, and it will be released in 2024.
But that’s not all! There’s also some details of four of the other stories to be included in the book – all via ClubStephenKing who reported the news.
- “Two Talented Bastids” explores the long-hidden secret of the two eponymous gentlemen and how they obtained their talents‘
- “Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream” features a brief, unexpected psychic flash that disrupts the lives of dozens of people, and Danny’s life catastrophically
- “The Dreamers”, in which a taciturn Vietnam War veteran responds to a job offer and learns that there are corners of the universe it would be better not to explore
- “The Answer Man” asks the question of whether knowing the future is a good or bad thing, and reminds us that a life marked by unbearable tragedy can still be important
This, to me, is very exciting. I’ve been less of a fan of King’s crime stuff, but this sounds like a return to the horror stuff I love and grew up reading. A new Stephen King horror is always a treat, and I’m particularly a big fan of his short story collections.
I cannot wait for this (despite it sounding like a new Leonard Cohen album). Will you be reading You Like it Darker?
