There are now well over 3,000 backers and £180,000 pledged to Chris McDowall’s Mythic Bastionland RPG. The game is an imagined past of two other RPGs: Into the Odd and Electric Bastionland.
The funding goal was £12,000, but that’s been met easily, and there are still three weeks left to run at the time of writing. You can see progress or watch the countdown from the pitch page.
There are free quickstart rules, a chunky 74-pages, available from a Google Drive hosted PDF.
In Mythic Bastionland, the player characters start as young knights errant on a quest for glory. The characters seek to lead warbands, earn a place in court, and rule their own domain. Glory is found by hunting the Myths of this world, bringing them to life while protecting the Realm from their strange influence.
Each player chooses one of 72 Knights, each with personal equipment, unique ability, and passion. As their glory grows, they may eventually embark on the legendary City Quest, an impossible challenge to find The City itself, a shining metropolis seen only in dreams.
The rules are streamlined to support a campaign of exploration, where PCs travel across a hex-mapped Realm full of Myths. Each Myth slowly reveals its omens as you journey through its land. The rulebook comes with 72 Myths.
Hex-crawling, domain management, ageing, exploration, and mass battles are all handled through fast, streamlined mechanics.
Mythic Bastionland is inspired by British folklore, Arthurian legends, and our own myths of the medieval era. I’m especially interested in the lies we tell about history, whether by misconception or design.
Just as this game was written in 21st Century Britain, this world was born from the stories told in Industrial and Electric Bastionland.
Fans who pledge £19 or more in support get a PDF copy of Mythic Bastionland as a thank-you reward.
The hardback is added at £50, with optional add-ons also offering print copies of Electric Bastionland.
That’s it. The tiers are kept simple, and the PDF is slated for a March 2024 delivery, with the hardback a few months later and in May.
The Kickstarter of Mythic Bastionland closes to new supporters on the 7th of December.
