We haven’t seen any creepy children’s toy movies in a hot minute, so meet Chauncey; the bear that looks just like any other teddy of a decent vintage, only he’s HAUNTED. Or possessed. Or who knows, really.
Blumhouse went all in here by releasing the trailer, a ‘Friends Forever’ teaser promo video AND a motion poster for the new film.
I quite like the promo video which features little kids talking about their imaginary friends and how they can become a bit creepy. It sets the tone well, and “taps into the innocence of imaginary friends – and begs the question: Are they really figments of childhood imagination or is something more terrifying lying just beneath?”
As for the film’s plot:
When Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.

See what I mean? They’re really pushing for us to be scared of this bear. As a horror veteran (and someone who laughed out loud during the likes of The Nun and Midsommar), I may have been around the block one too many times for this one. But the younger generation may get more of a fright out of it.
Imaginary is being released by Blumhouse and Lionsgate, and you’ll be able to see it in cinemas from March 8, 2024.
What do you think of Chauncey the Bear? Do you reckon if they gave him a straw hat he might make a good first mate for Monkey D. Luffy? Comments welcome.
