We’re in the age of sequels, reboots and prequels to all the things we used to love as kids. But Tim Burton has said NO to anyone even THINKING about touching The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The writer spoke to Empire for a major 30th anniversary celebration, alongside director Henry Selick and co-writer Caroline Thompson, and issued one of the most artistically precious statements ever to have been uttered.
Here’s what Burton said:
To me the movie is very important. I’ve done sequels, I’ve done other things, I’ve done reboots, I’ve done all that shit, right? I don’t want that to happen to this. It’s nice that people are maybe interested [in another one], but I’m not. I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won’t sell to the big power-plant that wants to take my land.” Cue the grumpy old prospector voice: “Get off of my land!” he barks. “You pesky little… You ain’t getting this property! I don’t care what you want to build on it. You come on my property… Where’s my shotgun?
Tim Burton has spoken, ladies, gents and those of you not so assigned. It’s a no-go.
And, well, I personally don’t have a problem with that idea. I’m tired of old things being revisited… I want to see things that are new. Don’t you?
The character of Jack Skellington is especially beloved to Burton, who describes him as a “character that’s perceived as dark, but is really light. Those are the kinds of things that I love, whether it’s [Edward] Scissorhands or Batman, characters that have that. It represented all those feelings that I had. I was perceived as this dark character, when I didn’t feel that way. So it was a very personal character.”
But, as Jessica from GeekTyrant pointed out, it would be exceptionally cool to see a completely new story told in the same sort of animation style as The Nightmare Before Christmas.
And, you can revisit the original, and much adored movie, on Disney+ right now.
