In another moment of quelle surprise, Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski recently spoke to Cerealkillerz during Vienna Comic Con, and explained the show’s creative team just aren’t interested in his ideas for the show.
During an interview, Sapkowski was asked if he gave any input on the show when he visited the set – and whilst he was impressed at what he saw, the author went on to say the creative team “never listen” to him:
Well the set was tremendous, it was so wow, everything. But no, maybe I gave them some ideas, but they never listen to me. They never listen to me, but it’s normal, ‘Who’s this? It’s the writer, it’s nobody’.
Sapkowski also opened up about how it feels to see various adaptations of his work, stating:
Every adaptation that I saw was strange for me, that’s the right word I suppose, strange. Every visual adaptation is strange for me. I look at it and say, ‘Woah, that’s how they picture it? Interesting.’ Sometimes the impression of the visual is very nice for me, sympathetic. Sometimes it isn’t, but I will not elaborate.
Sapkowski’s had some interesting and at times controversial things to say about his work out in the wild before, and he’s always come across as very… opinionated. This is the first interview I’ve read from him where I actually empathise.
I have my own very strong opinions on the Witcher Netflix adaptation, let’s just say that much. Henry Cavill, a big Witcher fan himself, was the one person who stood up for the books more than anyone… and now he’s been replaced, and they won’t even listen to the author? *disapproving noises*
To be honest, I probably won’t watch the next season – in all honesty, haven’t even finished season three, which suffered under the weight of the creative choices. Which is a great shame, as I’m a huge Witcher fan – but it feels, just like Cavill, we (true fans) are being pushed out.
