An interesting new trailer for the survival drama The End We Start From has just dropped, starring Emmy award-winner Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, The Last Duel).
When I say it’s ‘poignant’, I mean, it’s just dripping poignancy. It’s about survival, and it’s definitely a bit close to the bone, but at the same time there’s hope and light, too. Which is… less depressing.
Comer stars alongside Joel Fry, Katherine Waterston, Gina McKee, Nina Sosanya, Mark Strong, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Mahalia Belo directed this one from a screenplay written by Alice Birch (Normal People).
The official synopsis reads:
England, tomorrow: Forced out of London by cataclysmic flooding, a new mother (Jodie Comer) her partner (Joel Fry), and their infant make their way to his parents’ home in the countryside, only to find the situation growing increasingly desperate there, as well… An apocalyptic drama that still makes room for hope, The End We Start From uses the language of genre to ask the only question that matters about our increasingly bleak future: What will you do? And why aren’t you doing it already?

I’ve been aware of Comer since My Mad, Fat Diary, but was only really won over by her in Killing Eve. This new role has been described as ‘career defining’ for her since it premiered at the Toronto and London Film Festivals this autumn – and from this trailer, I can kind of see why. I just get that sense about it.
The End We Start From will be released on January 19, 2024 and I’m really looking forward to this one.

What do you think – is this a film you’re excited for, or are the climate change realness vibes a bit too triggering a reminder that we’re likely all doomed?
