There are two new official Call of Cthulhu RPG offerings from Chaosium this week to celebrate the dark ritual of the 40th anniversary.
There’s the Call of Cthulhu 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Keeper Rulebook.
There’s also the pocket-sized Keeper Tips. The latter has RPG tips from Keepers, aka Call of Cthulhu GMs, including Jason Durall (RuneQuest), Becca Scott (Good Time Society), Sean Branney (H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society), Allan Carrey (Type40), Lynne Hardy (The Children of Fear), Bridgett Jeffries (The Miskatonic Repository) and Chaosium’s own Mike Mason (Call of Cthulhu).
Wikipedia notes that Call of Cthulhu was first published in 1981, which was 42 years ago, and the second edition came out in 1983. The current Call of Cthulhu, seventh edition, will be 10 years old next year and was written by Paul Fricker and Mike Mason in 2014.
Call of Cthulhu is a roleplaying game set in a darker, Lovecraftian version of our world. Players take on the roles of Investigators who explore the strange and terrifying corners of the Mythos, encountering ancient civilisations, monstrous beings, and the maddening truths of the universe. The game can be played in various settings, from the 1920s to ancient Rome and beyond, and even in non-Lovecraftian settings with custom creatures and stories.
The Call of Cthulhu 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Keeper Rulebook has the core rules, backgrounds, tips, spells and those dreadful Lovecraftian monsters.
What’s special about this digital collector’s edition? There are never published before essays and thoughts from official CoC creators such as Penelope Love, Lynne Hardy, Mike Mason, Mark Morrison, Paul Fricker, et al.
There are also the adventures in Amid the Ancient Trees and Crimson Letters. However, the addition of The Haunting was the adventure from the first six editions of the game. It’s now entered Chaosium’s own mythos, recognised as a rite of passage and added back.
