Angela Blackmoore, a woman from Christchurch in New Zealand, was murdered in 1995. In 2019, Jeremy Powell confessed to the killing.
Powell argues that he and Rebecca Wright-Meldrum were paid $10,000 to murder Blackmoore. Powell, who was about 20 at the time, says that it was David Hawken who commanded them to commit the crime and that Hawken also threatened his family if he refused to do so.
The first attempt to put Rebecca Wright-Meldrum and David Hawken, who both deny involvement, to trial had been abandoned when fresh evidence came to light.
In this trial, being held in the Christchurch High Court in front of Justice Rachel Cunningham, the defence lawyers have argued that there’s a connection between the murder and Jeremy Powell’s interest in D&D.
Prosecutor Pip Currie countered this, saying,
Supposedly, because Jeremy Powell played Dungeons and Dragons – the board game with dice and other participants – that translates into him being a sadistic killer.
I suggest that is totally far-fetched and ludicrous to make a submission like that.
The jury seems to have agreed and found both the defendants, Rebecca Wright-Meldrum and David Hawken, guilty.
After the verdict, Angela’s partner at the time of her death, Laurie Anderson, said the guilty verdict was “fantastic”.
I have spent the four weeks sitting listening to these two parasites from society. I always knew Hawken was involved in Angela’s murder that night. He is a two-bit con artist always looking how to steal or trick people by giving false promises,”
