Welcome to the first ever Perception Check: Trailer Edition podcast! This is a brand spanking new series headed up by myself (Bronwen Winter Phoenix) and Adam ‘Fenn’ Fenton (we just call him ‘Fenn’) – who you’ll also be seeing more of in our upcoming blogs!
This is your weekly roundup of movie, TV and video game trailers – or, at least, the ones we’ve found interesting enough to cover here on Geek Native.
Check out the podcast below – there’s also a full transcription.
Bronwen: Welcome traveller, this is your perception check. A weekly roundup of interesting trailers we’ve pulled together at Geek native. Fenn, Are you ready to roll for perception?
Fenn: Absolutely. Thank you, Bronwen. Let me see. I’ve rolled a 14. That’s not bad.
Bronwen: Show off.
Fenn: What about yourself?
Bronwen: I have just rolled and it’s just almost gone off the table. You’re kidding me. I’ve rolled 14 as well.
Fenn: Fantastic. That’s boding well for our first time.
Bronwen: We’re on equal ground.
Fenn: So what do we perceive ahead of us?
Bronwen: What do we perceive ahead of us… Well, we have some movies, some TV. Well, one TV trailer, teaser trailer and some video game trailers. So let’s go to movies first. Now, this is one that really caught my attention this week. It’s called no way up. And it’s just been released by altitude films as an intense dramatic survival thriller. And basically it’s sharks on a plane. It’s fucking wild. Yeah. What do you think of this one, Fenn?
Fenn: So there’s so much happening in this trailer, it’s to start off with. It just looks like it’s going to be something from final destination or something similar like it’s going to be an. Airplane crash or something like that and then they hit the the the ocean. And then they go to the bottom of the ocean and it’s all flooded and they’ve got to worry about oxygen and things like this. And they can’t get out. And then, I mean, it just builds from there. I mean, this trailer is. Going several levels beyond what you would expect to try, let’s be. At this point.
Bronwen: Yep, and it’s got Colm Meaney in it who we know is Chief O’Brien. And you know, someone has got to.
Fenn: But I mean, Chief O’Brien needs to suffer. This is probably this, this season’s chief O’Brien that needs to suffer. That happens all the time in DS9.
Bronwen: Yeah. I mean, Chief O’Brien, he’s got off to utter the words I’ve had. That’s it. I’ve had it with these motherfuckin’ sharks on this motherfuckin’ plane! Right.
Fenn: Sharks on a plane is just something that’s… Did they ever do it with Sharknado? I don’t know. I’m not sure there.
Bronwen: Don’t know.
Fenn: In the mix somewhere.
Bronwen: I’ve never seen Sharknado, but.
Fenn: It’s utterly… in terms of high concept, sharks on a plane is definitely high concept. It is a shame that we don’t have Samuel L Jackson on this one because with deep blue sea and snakes on a plane, this is the combination of those two movies.
Bronwen: Unfortunately, we don’t have a release date yet for sharks on a plane. For for no way up, basically.
Fenn: Sorry. There we go. That’s it. No Way Up. That was the one.
Bronwen: It’s No Way Up, but yeah, we we’re calling it Sharks on a Plane. No release date for that yet, but we’ll keep you updated. And next we’re moving on to T.I.M. Which is this crunchy, creepy look and sci-fi thriller.
Fenn: Now, is this uh? Is this a very famous wizard from a Monty Python movie? His name is T.I.M.
Bronwen: Uh, I I don’t think that’s the same one, but yeah.
Fenn: All right. OK. Which Tim is this? There’s many of them about.
Bronwen: Well, he is. I think it’s a he. Anyway, it could be a they. But yeah, there is. It looks like a male presenting AI Android. Who seems to become emotionally attached to his owner. And just spends the entire film looking creepy. As. Fuck and basically the term Tim. It stands for technologically integrated manservant.
Fenn: I always wonder with movies like this, do they come up with the name first or the really bad acronym because they it feels so bad.
Bronwen: I don’t know.
Fenn: In every time.
Bronwen: I don’t know but it ismeant to be ‘90s style and I’m really getting that from the trailer.
Fenn: It’s definitely got a ‘90s vibe to it.
Bronwen: Yeah, just the way he’s. Watching her and looking and like I think at one point he goes through her underwear or something, is that? It’s just really weird. So I’m looking forward to if you’ve seen any of my.
Fenn: Well, I will say that the the trailer does seem to cover a lot, but it.
Bronwen: Ohh yeah, it’s one of those where you think it. You might have seen too much of the film.
Fenn: But we do have this, uh, creepy, Android. Uh, I don’t know is. It is it. A or as I am now or something. I mean, what was the? Was it? Megan was the we’ve got the child Android recently. We’ve now got the. We’ve now got the manservant is there. Are we moving through the family? We’re going to have a.
Bronwen: Megan. Yeah.
Fenn: An Android wife and Android dog. Is this? Is this the direction that we’re going with these?
Bronwen: I don’t know, but the way my articles have been about AI in the past few months, I’m not helping the situation and it just makes me think that, UM, if any EI is are reading, are articles and watching these films, they’re going to get ideas. You know, I’ve actually written A blog about that as well.
Fenn: Oh, that stands creepy and intense as well, actually.
Bronwen: It’s a whole film in itself anyway. T.I.M. will be released in cinemas and on demand on January 12th next year, which is actually next month.
Fenn: That’s not so long. Yeah, that’s not too long at all. Yeah, something something to look forward to. So the next one that we were gonna look at was. So there’s a team. He he’s the trailer for series. Am I right in thinking this is a prequel to Stephen King’s IT?
Bronwen: It is, yes, and it’s all about Derry, basically Derry… In the Stephen King books, I mean, even the ones where we don’t mention it at all, really. It’s a very off place, so it’s a very interesting place to have a TV series. There’s so much potential in it because your Pennywise has been this kind of shape shifting Cryptid of a creature killing the good people of Derry, influencing them for many hundreds of years. And it’s always felt like there’s something rotten about Derry. So I’m I’m a big Stephen King fan, by the way, so I’m really excited about this.
Fenn: Yeah. As I understand it, a lot of things stories are kind of interrelated. So it’d be interesting to see what kind of law they bring into a much wider TV series than just one focusing on on 8.
Bronwen: Well, yeah. I mean, the Dark tower is kind of the heart of all his stories. They’re all kind of interwoven.
Fenn: So yeah.
Bronwen: And you know, even wrote himself into the Dark Tower. So that’s kind of what I love about his stuff as well.
Fenn: I would take the first opportunity to write myself out if I had the power. That’s dubious. But yeah, the really frustrating thing with this is that it is literally just a teaser. It is 6 seconds to tell you that this is coming. And it’s not even next year.
Bronwen: Yeah, it’s 6 seconds and it’s some kids on a bike. It’s a sort of a preview of kind of a revery seen one of those kind of areas where it’s all like dark. Yeah, but there’s not a lot to go on. But I don’t know what we can expect really.
Fenn: Even if you’ve rolled a 14 on your perception check, you’re not going to get much from this.
Bronwen: Even if we will. Yeah, I mean, we rolled a 14, but there’s only so much we can take from from six seconds. We’re not doing badly, though. I think we’re we’re doing alright this time.
Fenn: No, no, absolutely, absolutely it’s. It looks interesting. It looks it looks exciting. It be fascinating to see what actually all comes into this, but we are going to have to wait an entire year. It’ll be sometime in 2025.
Bronwen: Achar is going to be a lot more trailers before 2025 on this I can tell. Yeah. All right.
Fenn: So next in our agenda, next in our travels, we’ve got the game awards that came out with loads of trailers for lots of different things and I avoid saying it came out with trailers for lots of different. Video games for a reason.
Bronwen: Oh yeah.
Fenn: You’re going to tell us about OD because you’re really interested in this.
Bronwen: I wanna tell you all about OD. We don’t have any kind of release date for it yet, but let me just play you a little bit of this trailer because it’s such a strange thing to watch and listen to. Let’s go for it.
Audio plays:
The hungry purple dinosaur eats the kind Ziggy fox, the jabbering crab and a mad whale he started bending and cracking.
Audio continues playing, ending in a scream.
Bronwen: Right, I think that’s enough of that, but I don’t know what the problem is with hungry purple dinosaurs. I find that really appealing.
Fenn: My first thought was what what Barney was up to. But apart from that, I have no clue what this is about.
Bronwen: Barney, what the hell are you doing? OK, So what I find, really, there’s two things I find really interesting about. Firstly, it’s what you get when you put Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele together on a project. Cause holy shit, does that sound interesting. Secondly, it’s gonna be apparently like nothing else. It’s going to be blurring the boundaries.
Fenn: Yeah, they’re talking about him. It’s so weird, blurring the boundaries between movies and games. Moments, yeah.
Bronwen: Gaming and films. Yeah. And it’s going to be potentially like a totally new media format. So that excites me.
Fenn: It’s big, big claims. I’d love to see them do something really interesting with this, but for me, even without that claim. Scenes to fear that this involved in this is just. Rates. She’s she’s a fantastic actress. I’ve seen her in a few things now. Obviously. Most recently she was in the Dungeons and Dragons movie, but like. So, so good in this trailer, like the actual fear, and you can see the reflection in her eyes. I don’t know if you noticed this. There’s like, a door opening and you can see it in her eyes. It’s really quite disturbing, but like.
Bronwen: I did. Yeah. My perception is also 14 so.
Fenn: But I mean. The rest of the cast looked fantastic too, so I mean, even just that the cast alone is worth signing up.
Bronwen: Yeah, I am really quite excited about this. So I’ll be looking out for any other trailers or info we get on that. So that’s odd. Again, no release date yet, but we’ll keep you updated on the old Geek native. And finally, we’ve got the trailer for. Sci-fi video game Exodus starring Matthew McConaughey. What do you think about this one then?
Fenn: You know, it is really giving me lots of Mass Effect vibes and it may be because I’m actually replaying Mass Effect a little bit at the moment. I’ve gone right back to the beginning. I I’ve needed a little bit of a break and going back to my old comfort games. But it does feel a little bit like that. It’s got some great graphics, some really epic feel to it. There’s there’s world building going on without it being explicit without it being overt. Also like a core elements of humanity there, there’s there’s that whole thing of I mean, it’s it’s Matthew McConaughey introducing it, but also it’s that bit. From Interstellar, where he’s seeing his kid. Well, because he’s been in time dilation and he’s missed her growing up and there’s a big element of that in the trailer as well about the character missing out on somebody else’s life because it’s only a few days for her. Only a few days for him. But like lots of years for her. Really just massively interesting, really quite moving.
Bronwen: Yeah, I got strong interstellar vibes from this as well, but. In contrast to OD and it’s just so detailed, so rich that there’s such an emotional sort of storytelling element to this game that I was actually quite drawn into it just from watching the trailer, which I would say is a sign of what’s going to be a really good story.
Fenn: Yeah, I I’m always in for a good computer RPG with story elements. If you’ve got, I’d go back to Mass Effect again. If you’ve got some kind of system where your choices actually matter, they have an effect on the game worlds. They have an effect on the story that you’re. That you’re experiencing as well as telling really then then sign me up. It looks really interesting. I’ll definitely be looking forward to that.
Bronwen: And again, we don’t have a release date for that one, but that brings us to the end of our first ever. Edition of perception checks. So thank you very much for joining us. Anything to say before we end then?
Fenn: No, it’s been a. It’s been an interesting session. I thank you very much for joining me on our little journey here.
Bronwen: Well, you can watch these trailers on Geek Native.
Fenn: Now of course.
Bronwen: That’s it for this week – until our paths cross again.
