A24 is not afraid to put out movies that other studios would baulk at. That has historically been movies too ‘arthouse’ for more mainstream tastes. This time, they’re backing Alex Garland‘s (Annihilation/ Ex Machina) glimpse at an American that has now truly gone to war with itself in Civil War.
Starring Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist, and Nick Offerman as the President(!) Civil War is a high-concept, political disaster/war movie that feels very real, and worryingly possible.
A24 has typically been a studio that likes to keep trailers a little mysterious, to build up interest in finding out more about the movie and generate buzz. And Alex Garland has been a very interesting moviemaker in the scifi and thriller space.
This is an interesting departure for both, and I am definitely keen to see how this lands.
It feels a little like Contagion, and the recent Apple+ series Extrapolations, as it seems to be presenting a possible future history from a personal perspective of people living through it.
Civil War is expected April 26th, 2024
