Game designer DC Bradshaw has released the CALViN Core RPG for $1.
It’s a magical world out there, we’re told. We have fun, we’re urged. So, I did and bought the two-page download.
CALViN stands for ‘Constantly Altering Law-Variation and Innovative Nonsense’. That sounds fun, so if it’s the case that reality continues to ruin your life, perhaps an escape to the antics of the CALViN Core is called for.
A wise person once said, “Life’s a lot more fun when you aren’t responsible for your actions”, and in CALViN there is a touch of that.
The game begins with one rule – when your character tries to do something tricky, you must roll a d6. If you score five or more, then you succeed. I think that’s a tiger swift system.
If you fail, you invent a new rule, which becomes part of the game.
That’s where the “Constantly Altering Law-Variation” comes in, and there are a few wriggles; I don’t want to spoil the whole game.
Do the rules make sense? Well, I’m reminded of the quote;
I suppose if we couldn’t laugh at things that don’t make sense, we couldn’t react to a lot of life.”
Bradshaw is the talented designer of the gold best seller Little but Fierce, which is a set of simplified 5e rules for children of all ages.
