Want to know why Godzilla is pink in all the trailers for Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire? Because we sure as hell did, and now director Adam Winger has shed some light on the situation.
The director recently spoke to Total Film about why he made the bold choice, and why we can basically blame toys we grew up with in the ’80s (which was the best decade to grow up in, by the way).
Whenever I was talking to the visual artists, what I told them was, ‘I want the color palette of this film to resemble the experience of what it was like to walk down a toy aisle in the 1980s when you had ThunderCats, G.I. Joe, and Transformers.’ There was just this orgasmic feeling. So many colors and textures. That’s what I wanted to bring to this movie. This new, heightened reality. I wanted to find out: can you take that over-the-top toy-aisle experience, but then find a way to ground that into a reality?
O…kay. This does not bode well for anyone who’s an actual Godzilla fan, and my first instincts about this were entirely right. It seems Winger has made something absolutely over-the-top silly that kids can enjoy – and, okay, maybe that has its place (who am I to say?), but this isn’t something to get your hopes up for.
Toho is likely to best place to turn for future, decent, Godzilla content – and that’s okay. There’s some real hope for the franchise there, but it feels like Winger doesn’t properly comprehend the real nature of Godzilla and why it’s been such a success.
Here’s the official synopsis for the film:
The epic battle continues! Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.
Sorry for anyone still excited about this – I had my doubts when I saw Godzilla was pink, but was still able to hold onto a bit of hope. Now… nope. I might still watch it, but I’m now going into it forewarned.
