The first trailer for Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black has just been released by Studio Canal, starring Marisa Abela as the talented singer/songwriter.
Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy, Fifty Hades of Grey), the movie is set to put a spotlight on Winehouse’s remarkable rise to fame, as well as her personal life and the events leading up to her tragic death at the age of 27 (2011). The biopic was signed off by Winehouse’s estate in 2018.
Here’s the official description:
A magnetic voice. Timeless music. A true icon. A celebration of the most iconic – and much missed – homegrown star of the 21st century, Back to Black tells the extraordinary tale of Amy Winehouse. Painting a vivid, vibrant picture of the Camden streets she called home and capturing the struggles of global fame, Back to Black honours Amy’s artistry, wit, and honesty, as well as trying to understand her demons. An unflinching look at the modern celebrity machine and a powerful tribute to a once-in-a-generation talent.
You can watch the trailer below – and I think it delivers and comes across quite well. However, I felt a bit sad watching it, because Winehouse had so much talent and, well… 27 is no age. It kind of brought it all back to me, which is why I think this may prove a powerful watch, especially for her fans.
The cast also includes Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan, Juliet Cowan, Ansu Kabia, Bronson Webb, and Lesley Manville.
You’ll be able to watch Back to Black in UK cinemas from 12th April 2024, with the US following on 10th May.
