Cave of Monsters’ Henshin: A Sentai RPG did well at Kickstarter, raising $25k from gamers who fancied colourful high-action drama.
Think Power Rangers, and you’re in the Sentai genre, albeit the American adaptation, with squads colour-coded for roles. Guest Star Expansion adds more colour playbooks and is closing on the $8,500 just a day or so after launch. You can see progress on the pitch page.
Henshin! is a diceless system focused on moving the story forward so players can focus on roleplay, and it is a game that won plaudits for its diversity.
The new playbooks are;
- Gray is the custodian of the teams’ powers. Their master, provider, and guide had to make the tough choice to step into the action.
- Brown is the general—the right-hand man of the Big Bad who unexpectedly has to work with their closest enemy.
- Navy is a motorcycle riding, outsider hero, out on their own mission of righteousness…
- Copper is the squads’ mascot and helper, who hasn’t needed to see any combat…until now!
- Cyan is someone’s individual mech, gone haywire and is acting out!
- Multicolored is a monster of the week, whose decided that fighting might not be right for them anymore.
These colours are supposed to augment an existing squad or create a one-off character, perhaps for an inRL guest, rather than subvert the genre or game balance.
Backers who pledge $12 or more will get the Henshin! Guest Stars Expansion as a thank-you reward. This tier also unlocks a host of add-ons options.
At $25, a decision must be made whether you want Cover A or Cover B for the book.
The $35 tier also lets you pick which cover you want and gets you the core book, handy if you need it.
As a limited deal, both covers are available at $45.
Sentai fans can get their character into the game text, plus a choice of books, at $55.
The reward tiers continue after that and feature more of Cave of Monsters supplements and accessories for the game. At $1,000 one backer will get to design a whole module.
Henshin! A Sentai RPG – Guest Stars Expansion runs until February 8th; the estimated delivery is October 2024.
