We’ve got a new trailer for you today for the upcoming AI-themed sci-fi thriller entitled The Beast, starring Léa Seydoux and George McKay. It’s been described as a “centuries spanning sci-fi tragedy” which takes place over three different time periods: 1910, 2014 and 2044.
The film is set in the future (I’m assuming 2044) “where emotions have become a threat, Gabrielle finally decides to purify her DNA in a machine that will plunge her into her past lives and rid her of all strong feelings. She then meets Louis and feels a powerful connection, as if she had always known him.”
In the story, artificial intelligence has taken control of society as we know it, and humans must regularly ‘erase’ their emotions.
Hoping to eliminate pain caused by their past-life romances, Gabrielle (Seydoux) continually falls in love with different incarnations of Louis (MacKay). Set first in Belle Époque-era Paris Louis is a British man who woos her away from a cold husband, then in early 21st Century Los Angeles, he is a disturbed American bent on delivering violent ‘retribution.’ Will the process allow Gabrielle to fully connect with Louis in the present, or are the two doomed to repeat their previous fates?
Interesting. On one hand, humans are still around in 2044 (we haven’t blown ourselves up or anything), but we’re controlled by AI – who also haven’t killed us. Emotions are bad, though. I can’t make up my mind whether this is a good future or a bad one right now!
Anyway, check out the trailer below:
The movie is directed by Bertrand Bonello (Saint Laurent, Nocturama) and was directly inspired by Henry James’ novella published in 1903, called The Beast in the Jungle, “suffused with mounting dread and a haunting sense of mystery.”
The Beast will be released (that rhymes) later this month, on February 28th.
