Borderlands, Eli Roth‘s (Hostel) movie adaptation of the long-running “looter shooter” videogame franchise, has finally released its first trailer. And plenty of our favourite Vault Hunters are present.
It’s a really impressive roster. The movies stars Cate Blanchett (Thor Ragnarok) as Lilith, Kevin Hart (The Jumanji sequels) as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All At Once) as Tannis and Jack Black (The Super Mario Bros Movie) voicing fan favourite, Claptrap. Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie) rounds off the group with Tiny Tina, along with Florian Munteanu (The Creed series) playing Krieg, Tina’s protector. These characters are sent after a vault of treasure, which is hidden somewhere on the ‘dumpster fire of a planet’, Pandora.
Cue scifi road movie. With guns. And explosions.
The ragtag group of unlikely comrades, the chaotic violence, and tone of the script seems to be taking a leaf out of the Guardians of the Galaxy book. Which is not really much of a surprise (they’re apparently quite successful!) and might be enough to give it an audience of more than just the fans.
Videogame adaptations have long been a mixed bag, but last year we were treated to some very successful examples with The Super Mario Bros Movie, and the TV adaptation of The Last Of Us. The look of the movie trailer hasn’t got me worried, but it hasn’t confirmed we have box office gold either.
So now we get to wait to see if Roth manages to score a Legendary videogame adaptation; or if the movie gets instagibbed by a gruesome headshot.
Borderlands is expected August 9th, 2024
What do you think: will this be a great drop? What’s your favourite videogame movie adaptation and why is it the Bob Hoskins’ Mario movie?
